Each year, more and more Texas filmmakers are showing their work at major festivals like Sundance, Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Los Angeles, Tribeca, Slamdance and many others. But, these invitations usually come when filmmakers have exhausted their finances just getting their films finished. The Austin Film Society sets aside $10,000 annually from the funds raised for the AFS Grant to establish a travel grant program for Texas filmmakers on a rolling, year-round basis.
The program is intended to help offset travel costs for Texans whose work is invited to prestigious film festivals and events around the world. Eligibility is based on the festival or event that the film has been invited to, not on the film itself, and you need not be a member of the Austin Film Society to apply. For information on eligible festivals and events, please visit the Eligible Festivals and Events page.
Grants are given out as follows:
$500 for a North American festival (U.S, Canada, Mexico)
$1000 for an international festival
A particular film can receive only 1 domestic and 1 international travel grant for a total of $1,500 from the Travel Grant program. These grants will be disbursed until the $10,000 earmarked for the program runs out or the fiscal year (September 1st through August 31st) ends, whichever comes first. If a project has co-directors, the project can only receive up to $1,500.
You can apply for the AFS Travel Grant by downloading our application and either dropping it off with us or mailing it in. Please read over all the above sections before you apply.
