“The excitement derives entirely from the awareness of nitroglycerine and the gingerly, breathless handling of it. You sit there waiting for the theatre to explode.”
—The New York Times
“A masterpiece of suspense.”
—Christopher Nolan
This “existential thriller” (Pauline Kael) by director Henri-Georges Clouzot is a beautifully shot hell ride where a group of desperados are tasked with transporting truckloads of volatile explosives over hostile terrain to put out a fire. The story was memorably remade by William Friedkin as SORCERER, but the original has tension and cinematic beauty all its own.
