ABOUT THE PROGRAM

For more than two decades, the Austin Film Society has served as the hub of Austin’s vibrant film community. Summer @ Austin Public has offered a unique opportunity for youth to work with local filmmakers and experience the magic of filmmaking at our shiny new facility @ Austin Public, just minutes away from the 51st Street campus! Whether it’s developing a script idea, producing an animation project, or now learning how to produce a TV show, AFS programs provide a fun, nurturing space for exploration and collaboration.

AGES 13-16

In this camp, you’ll be watching works from some of the great comedians of the past, learning about different forms and styles such as parody and improv, and exploring tools for character development. Put it all together when you create, shoot, and edit comedic videos that will keep your friends laughing for days.

AGES 9 - 11
Learn about the many principles of the action adventure genre, including in-camera tricks, stunt choreography and comedy timing. Students will make homages to classic works and create their own action adventure masterpieces.

AGES 15-18

This camp explores the power of film as a platform to address social issues within modern society e.g. injustice, oppression, poverty, etc. Filmmakers will work in groups to create short films that expose and educate audiences on a subject of their interest.

AGES 12-15

Campers will be immersed in effects-based filmmaking as they learn from and recreate both classic and contemporary special effects techniques. Some examples include (but are not limited to) forced perspective, green-screening, stop-motion/pixilation, and working with puppets and models, and the techniques campers learn will be used to create a final group project that will be screened at the end of the week.

Learn the techniques and movie magic behind some of your favorite sci-fi and fantasy films. From special effects to costumes and modeling, how do you create the look and feel of these genre films?

AGES 12 - 15
From universal themes to suspenseful moments, explore the fundamentals, going as far back as age-old folk tales, working forward to contemporary (age-appropriate) psychological thrillers. Participants will create their own short films, developing projects from idea all the way through final edit.

AGES 9 - 11
Immerse yourself in the world of animation through activities that explore basic history, theory and practice of the art. Hands-on projects will cover the fundamentals of animation, utilizing such techniques as flipbooks, drawing/scratching on film, paper cutouts and claymation.
