Celebrate Black History Month and Black Leaders with a special event at AFS Cinema!
In commemoration of Black History Month, children, families, and individuals of all ages are encouraged to join the Austin Film Society in a special pre-launch celebration for the upcoming children’s book, The City We Built: Black Leaders of Austin. We will be joined by the book’s authors Terry P. Mitchell and Carre Adams, in addition to many other special guests for a mixer, conversation, and more.
Immerse yourself in this illuminating read, featuring full-page biographies and vibrant, full-color portraits, paying tribute to the extraordinary African American men and women who have left an indelible mark on Black Austin’s social, political, and cultural heritage. This book is a collaborative masterpiece brought to life by the Black Leaders Collective; George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center; and the renowned Texas visual artist Sadé Lawson. The City We Built will take readers on an empowering and inspiring journey through the rich history of Black Austin, showcasing local luminaries such as Ada Anderson, Charles Akins, Berl Handcox, Johnny Holmes, Azie Taylor Morton, Velma Roberts, Dorothy Turner, Willie Wells, and many more.
In the tradition of beloved titles like Little Legends and Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls, The City We Built is not just a book; it’s an educational journey that will inspire a new generation of Austin’s Black leaders while celebrating the heroes who have helped shape this remarkable city.
Guests will be invited and encouraged to pre-order the upcoming book from Black Pearl Books. As a special treat, those who pre-order the book during the event will receive an exclusive autographed book poster along with their purchase. Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of this historic celebration of Black history and Austin’s enduring legacy.
The City We Built: Black Leaders of Austin will be released by Arcadia Children’s Books in April 2024.
