A newly rediscovered, two-part, all African-American public television “soap opera” by writer Ishmael Reed and director Bill Gunn (GANJA AND HESS). PERSONAL PROBLEMS crosscuts between different character vignettes in a proto-mumblecore style that was influenced by daytime television and necessitated by the microscopic budget. What really comes to life here is the characters and, especially, Reed’s dialogue, which comes to encompass rich facets of the characters’ lives. Shot on ¾ inch videotape, with funding provided by a single small arts grant, this is truly a special experience, and one you will not soon forget. With special guest host, freelance writer Kahron Spearman.
