ONE PLUS ONE, Jean-Luc Godard’s original title for SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL, gets at the film’s larger purpose: to contrast and compare the in-studio creation of the classic 1968 Rolling Stones composition “Sympathy for the Devil” (soon to become infamous in the Maysles’ GIMME SHELTER) with a series of radical political statements. Inspired in part by the Black Panthers, Norman Mailer, English militant Frankie Dymon Jr., and his own turbulent relationship with Anne Wiazemsky, Godard poses many questions throughout this challenging but extremely rewarding minor triumph but one resounds: will political passivity trigger the world’s collapse? Fifty years on, Godard’s fixations seem as prescient as ever. (Davis Rivera)
