This remarkably realistic narrative film, which won the Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award, takes us into the day-to-day lives of an African American family in Florida as they cope with the reality of poverty and racism. Made with a cast of non-actors in a style that resembles a documentary, it creates a new space for thinking and feeling about issues that may at times seem hopelessly insoluble. Ben Kenigsberg in his New York Times Critics’ Pick review calls the film “a portrait of lives that can’t be reduced to statistics.”
