Six year old Hushpuppy (Quvenzhané Wallis) and her father, Wink (Dwight Henry), live in the Bathtub, a Delta community about to wash off the face of the earth. Hushpuppy’s mother has abandoned the two – her father says she swam away. When Wink gets sick Hushpuppy is left alone to ride out the coming storm and the creatures (real and imagined) it unearths. The film is a beautiful meditation on the resilience of children. Wallis is the youngest actress to be nominated for an Academy Award.
