Principles of Cinematography Workshop

This is a 6-hour, two night workshop, with the first session held virtually and the second session held in-person.

Because this class has a hands-on component, participants are required to have taken an AFS Sony camera class as well as our Rig and Stabilizer class. Knowledge of lighting and grip gear is also preferred.

Part 1: (Virtual)
In this foundational first session, students will be introduced to the essential principles of cinematography, focusing on both the theoretical and technical aspects of the course. This online class will cover lens selection, various lighting techniques, and the fundamentals of shooting a scene, offering a comprehensive understanding of how these elements work together to create the visual language of film. We will also explore the on-set dynamics between different production departments, providing students with a clear picture of the collaborative nature of cinematography. This course is designed to prepare students for the hands-on application and deeper exploration of these concepts in Part 2 of the workshop.

Part 2: (In-Person)
This workshop is a hands-on application of the principles and theory discussed in Part 1. We will discuss and demonstrate some of the lighting terms used on set, such as “high key,” “low key,” “upstage,” “downstage,” “stops,” and much more. Students will learn how to modify and shape light in order to gain proper scene exposure and establish the look of a project. Students will learn how camera placement and movement, along with lighting, work to inform and influence the audience. Demonstrations include but are not limited to lighting and camera placement for interviews, lighting a narrative scene, or using available light for outdoor shooting.

The following topics will be covered in this two-part series:

  • Lighting Techniques
  • Camera Placement and Movement
  • Lens Selection
  • On-Set Departments
  • Practical Exercises
