Andrei Tarkovsky’s final film finds him fully embracing the inspiration of Ingmar Bergman’s dramas (even casting some Bergman regulars) as well as furthering his study of the edges of darkness and light—a house at the end of the world, a family coming a part, a child in an apocalyptic wartime. Shot by Bergman cinematographer Sven Nykvist, the film contains some of the most memorable images of Tarkovsky’s oeuvre.
