Born in Houston and raised, not too far away, in Sugar Land, Texas, both of my parents worked at the family owned convenience store. Since both of my parents were always working, my siblings and I basically grew up with the TV and huge stacks of rented movies. I always looked forward to the end of the week when my mom would take us to go rent more. It was kind of bittersweet though. Being the youngest, I never got to pick what I wanted to watch. My parents didn’t really censor what we watched except for films with nudity or sexual content. I still remember my parents covering our eyes during those parts. So many of the movies we rented ended up having a lot of violence, which I think contributed to my somewhat morbid sense of humor. I love all types of movies, but when asked, I do prefer comedies because I love to laugh.
When it was time for me to enter college I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, so I ended up in the catch-all college, Liberal Arts, majoring in Japanese. Eventually, I found my way to the College of Communication and doubled majored in Radio-TV-Film. Most of my time in college was spent doing productions and taking production courses, which I enjoyed, but I do regret not exploring the other aspects of film. By interning with AFS I’m hoping to experience the full range of film.
