In the fall of 1985, aspiring filmmakers Richard Linklater and Lee Daniel, along with a group of their friends, established the Austin Film Society to screen classic and contemporary movies they had never seen before. They asked Scott Dinger, original owner of the Dobie Theater, to let them show a midnight series of experimental films on one of the theater's two screens. Twenty years later, AFS once again partners with the Dobie Theater to bring exciting new cinema to movie lovers in Austin, Texas.

Associate programmer Jameson West and Director of Programming Chale Nafus select films that represent the latest and best of global cinema and independent film offerings. Most of the titles chosen have earned recognition and received awards at national and international film festivals.

Named Best Film Series in the 2006 Austin Chronicle Readers Poll (sharing the award with the Paramount Summer Series).

We have no AFS@Dobie Cinema screenings scheduled at this time.
