Emigration from Africa in the 20th and 21st centuries is the new face of the diaspora. Often for educational or business purposes, but increasingly for job opportunities, Africans, both sub-Saharan and Northern, travel to Europe in search of employment in jobs “unwanted by Europeans.” Their new “hosts” gladly partake of their labor and sweat but give little in return but meager wages. The life of the “guest worker” is often lonely and isolated. In Pol Cruchten’s film, 20-year-old Dju Dele Dibonga goes to Luxembourg in search of his father who has stopped sending money and letters to his family in sunny Cape Verde. During his journey, Dju runs into his own set of problems in an increasingly xenophobic Europe. -- Chale Nafus
