Despite the grinding poverty of his village in Martinique, young Jose lives happily with his elderly grandmother. One of his favorite pastimes is to go to the hut of an old neighbor, who tells him wondrous tales from Africa. Jose adapts those tales from the ancient homeland for his own writing class in school, and after a great misunderstanding on the part of his biased teacher, Jose is rewarded with a partial scholarship to a more prestigious school in the capital. The world opens up to the young boy’s mind as he explores the wonders of books and his new surroundings. SUGAR CANE ALLEY provides a heart-warming study in hopefulness through education. Euzhan Palcy’s debut film won a Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival. -- Chale Nafus
