Benny's Video
Spaces Between Realities: the Films of Michael Haneke
Benny spends long hours watching videos he has shot – some of street scenes outside his bedroom window, but more often scenes of the slaughtering of a pig in the countryside. He obsessively forwards, rewinds, slows down, and freezes the images of life and death. The teenager befriends a friendless classmate and brings her home where he displays his videos. After committing an apathetic murder, he stuffs her body into his closet and then watches this new video of home slaughter. When his parents discover the corpse, their solution to the family dilemma reveals how young Benny has become so alienated and affectless. -- Chale Nafus, Director of Programming, Austin Film Society |
