Lupe, the outstanding beauty in a town full of beautiful people, is being courted by three men. Handsome, young Ramón, a fellow villager in Tehuantepec, is so in love that he will fight to get her. The unattractive, older Don Atanacio shamelessly extorts Lupe’s father: pay your loan or give me your daughter. But the one who Lupe madly loves is Juancho, a handsome sailor whose work on a boat allows only sporadic visits. The men of Lupe’s town strongly believe that “their” women should not marry outsiders, such as Juancho, even if they are from nearby towns. Provincialism and patriarchal views make an explosive combination in this melodrama, full of beautiful music, regional dances, and a nuanced performance by a scintillating Lupe Vélez, in the first of her only two Mexican films. -- Chale Nafus
