CAMPAIGN is AFS Documentary Tour Selection for February

Feb 4 2008 - 4:37pm
Etc/GMT-6
Body:
(Austin, TX) - The Austin Film Society (AFS) today announced it will present CAMPAIGN on Wednesday, February 13, at 7 p.m. at the Alamo Drafthouse Downtown (320 E. 6th Street) as part of its monthly Documentary Tour series. Kazuhiro Soda, who directed, shot, edited and produced the film, will be present for Q&A about this timely story exploring democracy and elections.

"First feature docu by Gotham-based filmmaker Kazuhiro Soda is a wry, fly-on-the-wall look at local politics, Japanese style -- and in particular, the mighty machine of the country's ruling Liberal Democratic Party. The result is an insightful, ironic portrait of campaigning at street level," writes Derek Elley in Variety. The film has screened at festivals, including Berlin, Hot Docs and SXSW, and is part of the Why Democracy? global media project, a series of films airing on television around the world exploring the topic of democracy.

Tickets are $4 for AFS members and students with current IDs and $6 for the general public. Tickets for AFS members and non-members may be purchased online at www.austinfilm.org. Tickets at the student rate can only be purchased inside the theater on the night of the screening. Online ticket sales close at 3 p.m. on the day of the screening. Remaining tickets will be available inside theater on night of the screening. Please visit the AFS Web site for ticket availability and more information about the film.

The AFS Documentary Tour is made possible in part by support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, and the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division.

Austin Film Society promotes the appreciation of film and supports creative filmmaking by screening rarely seen films, giving grants and other support to emerging filmmakers, and providing access and education about film to youth and the public. Through Austin Studios, which AFS opened in 2000 in partnership with the City of Austin, AFS helps attract film development and production to Austin and Texas. Gala film premieres and the annual Texas Film Hall of Fame Awards raise funds as well as awareness of the impact of film on economy and community. The Austin Film Society is ranked among the top film centers in the country and recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts and Directors Guild of America.
